Web Isolation – The Key to eliminating ransomware and phishing

Clicking on links remains the greatest risk for ransomware and other malware attacks. Web Isolation (also known as Remote Browser Isolation or RBI) can reduce or even eliminate this risk.

Web Isolation/RBI protects users by removing the act of internet browsing from the end user’s device and into a remote service (Gartner, 2020). Implemented correctly, Web Isolation/RBI can allow users to click on even very dangerous links without putting their endpoint and their organization at risk.

Several technical approaches to Web Isolation exist in the market, with potentially very different levels of robustness against attacks. As Web Isolation/RBI becomes increasingly mainstream and attackers start to look for ways through it, some approaches will prove stronger than others. Henry Harrison, CSO Garrison, will explore the benefits of a correctly implemented Web Isolation/RBI solution, and will identify the key differences between Pixel Pushing approaches and Transcoding approaches and how those differences could affect the efficacy of Web Isolation/RBI deployments. Paul Branley, Deputy CISO and Director of Strategy, Innovation and Testing will then give a case study of Lloyds Banking Groups’ journey deploying a Web Isolation solution into their organization.

Paul Branley

Deputy CISO and Director of Strategy, Innovation & Testing @ Lloyds Banking Group

Paul was appointed as Director of Strategy, Innovation & Testing in May 2018 and Deputy CISO in 2021. This role brings together the security strategy for the Group, security innovation, along with vulnerability management and testing into a single function within the Chief Resilience & Security Office.

This was a deliberate move to align the long-term picture, with the transformational agenda and the real world here and now issues.

Paul’s main focus for security is to keep pace with the constantly evolving threat landscape and to be better tomorrow than we are today. He wants to ensure Strategy, Innovation and Testing has the best people capability, processes and technology in place.  Not only to protect and defend the Group and Lloyds customers, but also to join forces with our peers, Law Enforcement and the Intelligence Agencies to help make Britain a safer place in the fast-moving digital world.
